Since the Palace opened its doors in 1979 it has been subject to the severe and ever changing weather conditions of the Appalachian Mountains. As a result, the regular maintenance and renovation means continual expenditure, especially for some of the more vulnerable elements of the structure. The high quality of materials and craftsmanship used in the Palace makes the cost of many repairs significantly higher than a conventional structure.
Recently there have been significant repairs to the roof and dome. In 2013, the front steps will require extensive repair with a projected cost of $100,000.
A plan to have the current tour of the Palace expanded to 90 minutes. Plans are also underway for a newly erected visitors’ center and Cafe. Another new attraction, Visitors will get an introduction to the history of the Palace of Gold, the achievements of Srila Prabhupada, and the basic tenets of the Hare Krishna philosophy in a multimedia exhibit
